Toxic food is killing humanity: One-fifth of global deaths now linked to processed junk food and toxic ingredients

Unhealthy food is killing a huge amount of people each year. There is a strange conflict between the amount of information available to us about the dangers of eating unhealthily and the number of people who still do.The developed world is in the grip of an obesity epidemic, as processed food is on the rise people seem unable to avoid it, despite knowing the health risks. But a new study has revealed just how dangerous processed and junk foods are, being the cause of around 20% of all deaths worldwide each year. The study conducted by The Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington and published in The Lancet Medical Journal unearthed the shocking results. Many cancers, chronic diseases, and type 2 diabetes are all diseases which are directly linked to poor diet and to being overweight, meaning that with a proper diet and nutrition these deaths could be easily avoided. While there are warnings and legal ages on the purchasing of other dangerous substances such as alcohol and cigarettes, there is no warning on a pack of cookies. The Guardian reported:
“The study, based at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, compiles data from every country in the world and makes informed estimates where there are gaps… Diet is the second highest risk factor for early death after smoking. The problem is often seen as the spread of western diets, taking over from traditional foods in the developing world.”
Children are raised on junk food more now than ever, due to the perceived difficulty and cost involved in eating healthy, a myth that the processed food industry works hard to perpetuate.
So-called ‘convenience’ foods are marketed as cheap and easy, and the unwitting consumer is all to easily taken in by the propaganda. These results will no doubt shock those who realize there is a problem with food in today’s society, sadly a huge number of people will ignore the data, believing that it won’t be them who falls ill due to their diet, as they continue to ignore the advice of doctors and dietitians.
